Ok so while I'm waiting for a new coil I thought I would check the valve clearances.
Followed instructions, TDC mark on upstroke of piston etc.
But...............
No slack/gap at all in tappets at that position, rotate it (significantly) further and gap appears which are almost within tolerance (bit tight)
Is it possible that crank has been put on 180 out in the past, there are signs that casings been off, or am I missing something?
Done this loads of times on old cars never come across this before. Can I simply make adjustments to the 'open' position?
