Title: Dragon Rally 2011
Post by: guest7 on February 17, 2010, 11:53:02 AM
Can I just put it on the record that my brother and I intend riding to next year's Dragon Rally on C90s.

To this end, if anyone hears of a C90 going for the right price then please let us know, it's going to take ages to get a sidecar on one as it is...  :D :D :D :D

In fact we'd like to throw down the gauntlet and challenge all to attend on a C90 or similar unsuitable machine. It is the 50th after all  ;)

I will probably have better things to waste my money on,besides riding to the Dragon on a C90 with be very easy, how many C90's do we see every year,  and the novelty would soon wear off, lets see if this actually comes to fruition

Well, if Gareth is involved these things generally see the light of day. I just fancy doing something different (for me) and given that we should be able to snaffle a C90 in the low hundreds then this should be easy and cheap to do. Some of the other options we considered are considerably more expensive. I imagine we would be able to recoup some of our costs after the rally by selling the remains of the vehicles on.

I'm not sure our desire is to do anything different or groundbreaking, we just talked about seeing the C90s at the rally this year and thought it sounded like a laugh. There's also the side issue of the C90 being possibly the biggest selling thumper of all time so there's a club tie-up there.

I think the point still stands that it being the 50th rally should, where possible, prompt an effort to turn up on something interesting.

Have you seen the price of C90s recently ?

I've seen some going for over £2K.

Ridiculous.

I suppose everyone is entitled to their own views. But some people don't publicly ridicule the Chairman's ideas.......

But to be fair, some of my ideas do need ridiculing to bring me to my senses. :D :D

However, in this case, I'll stick to my contention that having a silly plan is worth every penny of a couple of hundred quid, especially if you can sell it all on again on Ebay (with 'Rare' Dragon Rally provenance  :D).

Mind you, as I pointed out to my brother, we could leave the oil-dripping wrecks of two C90s up in North Wales with a pretty clear conscience if we had to ;)

Did it get there? Yes.  ;D

Did it get me back ? Yes ;D

Did it provide me with a great adventure, topped off with a great ride home, Yes.  ;D

Given the choice between this and a C90, No contest. End of.  :-*

Rather than leave them there Gc , ride them back and park them next to the Jawa.
Failing that, why not take the Jawa next year, it'll be running by then.

Not much of a challenge, it's running now. Oh hang on, it's a Jawa, you're right it may not be running by then  :D

The Jawa's new sidecar is off being painted this week. I have to paint the spare chassis, fab up a mudguard and slap it back onto the bike and then it's destination Ebay. The plan is to recoup most or all of the money already spent and I get to keep the very nice sidecar that the Jawa originally came with. To be fair that's the only plan we ever had for the rig, it's just that we briefly considered running it up to the Dragon (but sense prevailed).

On what are you basing that contention Rob? BTW the 50 quid offer still stands GC and no I still don't want the chair.

Looks like our posts crossed in the ether.

Thanks for the offer, but we'll take our chances on Ebay with a deeply optimistic £350 starting price.

"Whatever" is one of those words that seems to been nicked by the youngsters to such an extent that it's hard to hear it without having a mental picture of a teenager saying it in a bored tone whilst doing the W hand gesture. My latest favourite along those lines is the use of the word 'sick' to describe something that's really really good... although thankfully without an accompanying mime or gesture  :D

A bit different to the 'W' hand gestures we used as teenagers.....especially when some idiot pulled out on you.

To be fair Mark, if you're like the rest of us you will still be doing the gesture when some idiot pulls out in front of you.

In fact I took the solo out the other day for a rare ride (I haven't ridden much this year at all) and within half a mile some idiot woman pulled out in front of me and I punched her car's rear wing as I went past... some things never change eh?

Anyway, after some thread drift, phase one of the C90 campaign is to start telling everybody that I want a cheap step-thru. Phase two is to put a load of wanted ads in newsagents windows to test the water. I've printed some ads off and I will place them across the city over the next few days.

This may seem an odd way to buy a bike, but the technique has worked well in the past so it's worth a try. A friend of mine was once given a complete bike as the result of a wanted ad she had put up in her local supermarket.

Nice one. Will we be going for the full "Melbourne-North Cape on a Postie" look or will it be Tesco bags and bungees? Take a look on the ADV-rider at the BattleScooters bits, lots of ideas for you there.

I'm afraid that while I hope to make the rally it'll be on the Triumph or MZ for the following reasons:

a) I am only allowed additional bikes if:
             1. Karen gets additional Dogs/Cats/Children/Elefants (large snakes that might reduce the previous collection are excluded from the list of nice furry things)
             2. I move out of the house and live with said bikes in the garage
             3. I have no further plans for certain parts of my anatomy

b) I have enough problems with wayward electrics and mechanicals on bikes I've had for six and (censored) years of experience with. I have no idea where to fit the required sixteen additional earth straps to a C90.

C) I am yet to forgive Honda for what they charged for parts in 1991. (I will have my revenge on Tippetts of Surbiton).

D) I like my huge sleeping bag, bottle of port etc.

I shall therefore wish you luck and look forwards to welcoming the C90 riders with the usual post ride drinks  ;D

LOL, I'm guessing it will be a 'smiling through gritted teeth' look  ;)

To be honest if you had to choose one Honda to buy spares for it has to be the C90, the world is awash with bits for the bloody things.

I put up five postcards in newsagents and friends' businesses today... you never know your luck.  :D

Eh? You didn't think I was comparing you to a bored teenager did you? Many apologies if it came across like that, it was just one of those stream of consciousness replies; I was genuinely mulling over how such an innocuous word can be 'nicked' by one section of society. 'Random' is another bizarre example and I have to say I'm still not entirely sure of what my daughter means when she uses that word.

Anyway, sorry for the confusion.. I'll stick to my tried and trusted formula of stale jokes, weak innuendo and poor puns in the future  ;)

I'm not sure what's going on here, was there supposed to be some text added to that post? All I see is a repeat of my earlier post.

Mind you I see it was added at 7.16am so perhaps a caffeine deficit is to blame  ;)

GC,

Glad u are going to the dark side.  I had a hell of a hoot on the C90 at this years rally, got there and back on 2p of fuel, not quite but hellish cheap, buzzed along nicely past Trasfynnyd with some of the forum boys.  Sold ine the week after I got back for a profit, god knows why.

I will be buying another this year (you watch they will be like hens teeth in the winter) to do the 50th on so look forward to dicing with you like spotty teenagers again  :D

If u dont get sorted and still after one let me know.

Will

I toured a chunk of Ireland on one once.  Reliable and frugal but with a tiny tank range.  Carried spuds, carpet and passenger for bits of it too.

Not that much of a challenge though, compared to starting the Beemer on a frosty morning.

Eyeys are open though and scouting for a cheapish example.

I recently bought one, C90 economy  ???. I thought I'd get it for when I have my hip and knee replaced as I won't be able to cock my leg for a while and I wanted to keep mobile but I forgot how slow they are so it's up for sale at £300, MOT'd but V5 will have to be applied for(£25 I think)
