Title: SRX 400 Electrical conundrum
Post by: Ian on December 01, 2009, 10:21:00 PM
Hi everyone,
I have just spent about 2 hours searching through "back issues" in the bike problems searching to see if there was a similar problem to mine. As you are well aware Im trying to shoehorn this monoshock 400 engine into the twinshock frame at the expense of my sanity! Im going to ask a seemingly obvious question (to some) but to me its quite a complex subject....Im talking bike electrics  :-[  My problem is and it may be surmountable...can I use the monoshock alternator (or whatever you want to call it) with the wiring from the twinshock? As you may have guessed these are the "parts" I have at the moment. Im no mug with most facets of the SRX but wiring is sometimes a bit of a black art to me..I can readily replug everything back together after an overhaul but when i try tricky things like this I admit Im out of my depth.
Any help will be most graciously accepted
Regards
Ian (In a dazed state right now)

HI IAN, go onto the srx400 website and look into the article done by a south african where he puts a new engine in his twin shock. im sure he can answer all you need to know? look here, hope this helps?

I beleive the alternators are different. The twinshock has two wires feeding the rectifier/regulator Click Here (http://www.srx600.f2s.com/srx600/technical/wiringdiag/wiring_diag.jpg) were as I beleive the monoshock has three. The CDI's work differently as well, the twinshock gets it power directly from the alternator, but I believe the monoshock relies on a 12v supply (not 100% on this point)
It maybe that the twinshock alternator will bolt into the monoshock alternator casing (I've never tried it), that or a monoshock wiring harness.

If? they are any use to you,  I have a couple of casings complete with alternators fitted & working!

Well, at least I think I have?  if interested, let me know & I'll go have a rummage through all the stuff I have left in the garage.....

Monoshock alternator has 3 mounting bolts and twinshock has 4 :(    ...... Back to the drawing board

If you have no luck finding a monoshock wiring harness, then an SZR600 or Muz Skorpion harness would probabaly be close.

I have located a monoshock wiring harness and CDU, so hopefully will be able to move forward now (I was beginning to get depressed)... will probably need loads more electrical bits and help ...
But thanks to everyone so far

Ian :)
