hi all, ive just stripped and cleaned the carbs on my srx 250 and srx400 and on both upon reasembly have needed the manifolds repairing. It seems like the rubber part is bonded to the metal flange and its come away just enough to let air in and cause a regular back-fire. Ive sorted both of these with Araldite Rapid. The rubber had not come off either i had to pull on them to see the gap. On my srx250 the previous owner had tryed some orange sealant but this didnt work. these manifolds are £45 each and will take 6 weeks from japan so says fowlers and i wasnt prepaired to pay that. I was just wondering if anyone had had this happen to them as two bikes is no coinsidence. maybe you bike keeps poping on over run or at tick over, this would cause both. Here is a pic!

not had a problem with obtaining them for my 600's.....they come from yamaha's european spares hub in holland, take about 3 days......can't remember how much i paid last time though

Chris, the 400/600/twinshock/monoshock/UK/import inlet manifolds are all identical.

the six weeks was for the srx250 and the srx400 ones are a week but still £45 each delivered.

I give them a regular dose of Amourall. Soak, then apply more and work in with the fingers. Seems to stop the rubber perishing and retains that oiliness that the 'fuel' seems to strip out of the rubber. Twice a year?
Nothing worse than a crispy, split, rubber inlet! ::)

i have to admit that yamaha didnt really think about this....or maybe they did and its one of those money makeing parts that everyone needs and will always be replaceing. A part vital to the running of the engine but just expensive enough to make you wish there was another way to do it?????? they could have just done a solid flange and straight rubber. this could be done with the original metal piece. Just remove the tapered sealing edge and make it flat, then attach the rubber and clamps at both ends??? or am i thinking too much??? If my araldite repaired manifolds do hole again then i will try this out! i was also looking at the inlets to the engine and the manifolds dont port match very well, that and the surface is very rought cast. Has anyone ever polished the head of a srx400??? yes, im thinking too much. Just cant seem to leave any motorbike i get alone!!!

I would think that silicone grease would do just as good a job or even vaseline??

Vaseline (petroleum jelly) on your rubber causes rot/breakdown of the rubber/latex! ???
Silicone grease/spray maybe OK, but don't try and paint anything with overspray on it, as the paint won't adhere! ???
