Hi, can anyone help? I have a 1983 Honda XL600R and as i was riding it one day it just conked out on me. I found the Ignition coil to be open circuit on the secondary side so replaced the coil. However i still have no spark and now not sure whether there is a common problem that lots of people have experienced. I am fairly confident with electrics but not too sure where to start. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Jon

jon,
dodgy wiring and connectors often give symptoms before a complete failiure, such as problems in the wet and over bumps etc.
i'd suspect the cdi unit.
if you have cut out switches such as clutch/neutral/side-stand that still let the starter work, check these are not sticking and check the wiring.
a used cdi should be cheap, but used parts can often be as bad as the parts you replaced. try david silver spares or patternparts.net for new parts.
i'm assuming that 1983 is part of the cdi/electronic ignition generation. if its points let us know.

also have a quick look at where the pick-ups are (elcetronic points). see if it looks like anything has moved or made contact with anything else.
i'd imagine you now understand why some of the more primative bikers, myself included, prefer points. they may need regular care, but complete failiure costs £3 and 5 minutes to fix.
