hello gurus! ;)
A bit of necessary maintainance on the DR. Single pipe, 4v head.
The old pipe finally gave up the ghost such that no amount of GunGum would keep the gas going down the pipe. I had previously purchased a 2nd hand pipe (aus Deutschland).
Aber! Ich habe ein frage: wenn habe ich der auspuf.....
Ok, ok! I ground off the remnants of the nuts, removed the pipe, and prepared to mole-grip out the studs. Plenty of WD40, and, thinks I, a bit of heat.
Noisy heat! Just run it! I didnt expect it to run, but actually it was ok. Its lumpy as hell anyway!
I noticed that with each ignition stroke, and the exhaust valves opening, you could actually see blue flames in the exhaust ports. Almost exiting to atmosphere but not quite. I suspect, were there a pipe on there, it would be going down it...
Is this normal? Will I be burning my exhaust valves? The usual white deposits on the stems, but otherwise, just carbon present. The old pipe never got cherry-red or anything like that, but could this explain the pinhole (it was very close to the head). The old pipe (admittedly almost 20 years old) was very thin at that point.I am presuming it must be as the cam cannot really be out, ditto the timing (all CDI etc).
Anyway, just an observation. I've never run a motor without any kind of header before.
cheers all

Nah! I don't beleive that! ::)
All sounds quite normal to me, except you've never run a motor up without the header on! :o That's why you get that nice blued pipe to the engine side of the 'silencer;' if it contains baffles! ;D
The Duke took the paint clean off the frame with that stunt and a C90 can be pretty impressive without a pipe at night! ;D Below is a Utube demo.

Yeah....absolutely ok...I remember when i was a nipper ('bout your age andy) my dad used to rebuild/restore Sunbeams ((the pre war Marston, REAL sunbeams) most of the work was done in the basement of the house,...upon completion, the bike would be started...usually with no pipe, and I would get to look up the exhaust ports (I don't think we had any type of HSAW policy in them days)
The old fella would wind it up a bit and ask me if it was a good blue flame!! it was, so that was ok
Mother went potty what with the noise, and me arriving upstairs for a meal with me hair all swept back and covered in smuts ( yup...its true, i had hair once) i blame my teenage acne on these episodes.....you could get a lot smuttier hanging your head out of the train in them days...specially in a tunnel :D....happy days
