As usual there has been some interest in an end (ish) of year meeting at Dent again this year. The dates are 16th - 18th October. This co-incides with the Cossack owners' club meet but is of course open to invites from other individuals. I will be putting up the club marquee as usual and will get the old 'Jiko' out as well as supplying tea and coffee. I will be posting this on the XT660 site and some of the guys from the Horizons site are interested. Great opportunity to meet up with likeminded bikers, usually a great atmosphere and in the past, weather not too bad.
We usually get quite an eclectic mix of bikes and no programme is planned as this is not a club meet just a camping weekend with other bikers. Induviduals may want to arrange their own activities but none will be club arranged. ;D
Lets hope for an Indian summer!

Just been up to Dent this last weekend and it was really good weather

Few beers and barbie as usual.

Is this the Dent up in North Yorkshire?
(Highest railway station in the U.K. for useless information service!)
Iff'n it's there I will put a provisional YES as long as I have the right bike at the time. Good chance to get to know a few of you. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
-
Yes Dogbad, Dent is near to Sedburgh and easily accesible from Devils Bridge. We usually gert a good reception there, the site is very biker friendly as are the locals and local pubs. ;D
-
Las time I camped in Dent was on the Thorm Nomad touring Bicycle in December 2002, in the SNOW!
-
Thorn Nomad? It was bloody Thorn expedition tourers that led me to build a drop handlebar tourer using a Marin Team frameset. I lusted after a Thorn for years but couldn't afford one.
I met a bloke at a campsite in mid Wales who lived there all summer. He builds bicycle wheels for Thorn under a plastic gazebo next to his caravan. Apparently once a week he delivers the built wheels and collects all the bits and pieces for the next batch. When I met him he was building a wheel with a Rohloff 14 speed internal gear hub (like a Sturmey Archer 3-speed, but about ten trillion times the cost).

I just missed a Rohloff equipped Thorn XTC on the bay. Good Job I didn't win it though as I would have had to borrow the money to pay for it!
All the Bikes and Trikes I have now are recumbents. Much more comfortable and I have the "AeroBelly" for cheating the Headwinds :P

Sorry SteveD, I'm putting my eggs in the November meet-up basket. Time and funds won't stretch to two outings in two months. Have a larf though.
-
Change of plan! Double booked for the November meet so I'll be strapping the tent to the bike and heading for Dent instead. Save me a pitch and I'll see you on the Friday night.
-
Hi Steve, sounds good. Sent you a message on XT660 website as i see they are also planning a ride to Dent early Nov, not sure if it went through tho?? If anything i will see you on the Sat morning. Cheers. Warren.

Nice one Warren, It's a great place as a base for the weekend, I hope you will enjoy it. ;D

Steve, another cracking weekend. The running repair worked fine to the first petrol stop (about a 100 miles), but decided to loosen itself off a few miles further on, just south of Walsall. I was in a 50mph road works section at the time and couldn't immediately pull over to the hard shoulder. Eventually got to a position where I could pull off but the engine cut out on me. Looking at the huge puddle of oil the bike was creating on the side of the road I Called Carole Nash and got recovered home.
After filling the engine with oil, it does start, but it's leaking a bit towards the top end somewhere (need to remove the tank for a better look) and there's a bit of a ticking sound. It's done 84,000 kilometers now, so I guess it's time for a strip down and rebuild. Too advanced for me to undertake though, so I'm hoping to send it to a new home with someone more capable than myself in the spannering department so that it can live again!
Looking to pay a visit to the local Yamaha dealer on the weekend to see if they've got any shiny XTs available on 0% finance!
I haven't given up on making the Tibbie Shiels get together yet!

Simon,
you know you are always welcome to join us at LLanthony if things dont go to plan ;)
-
Thanks Jules. That sounds like a solid plan B then!
I'd considered taking the KTM to Scotland but it would be very hard work on such a long trip and it has limited carrying capacity. I don't fancy going without some creature comforts such as decent tent, loads of warm clothing, etc. because I didn't have room to carry. I can still remember how cold it was at the 2000 (or was it 2002?) Elephant when I packed a little too light for the conditions! I don't think I've ever been so cold camping!

I've been to Dent many times and never tire of the scenery. The only ball breaker is that industrial band across the country that is a nightmare to navigate through without going on motorways. This trip was no exception. The ride up through the Cotswolds and on into the Derbyshire Dales was all I could have wished for but my attempt to pass on into Yorkshire and on into Cumbria was a mess. I planned to head for Stockport to pick up the M60 and cut through, but this proved troublesome. I hit the evening commute and to add to my woes my lack of any sense of direction had me in the centre of Rochdale! A stop to check the map and it was off toward Hebdon Bridge, Haworth, Kiethley then Skipton heading for Kendal. A quick pasty at the last petrol before Dent and I was away over the moors passed the Ribble Viaduct and into the campsite.
The afternoon was fast disappearing by the time I was clear of the towns and it was dark when I finally arrived at the site. It was gone 8pm before camp was made and I was entering the pub. "Where the hell have you been?" was the cry. "We thought you might have crashed!" Charming! I told my tales for the price of a pint and had the pub in fits of laughter.
Next morning SteveH and I set off on a hill hike planned to last all day. We covered about 18 miles and every topic of conversation (mainly bikey), building up a quite considerable thirst by the time we returned to base at 6pm. The views are just breath taking and no photo can do them justice. Another cracking night of booze and banter followed in the pub until closing time then continued under the shelter of the club marque with braziers glowing and the whiskey doing the rounds. Met some great guys (hi shedbrewed) who I will no doubt bump into again at similar events or at the Dragon rally in February.
Sunday morning was damp and lazy. I broke camp after several restoritive cups of tea, a bowl of porridge and a hot shower. SteveH and I decided to travel back together and as I had the map (for all the good it does!) I lead the first leg. I usually take a more direct route for the home run and chose to stick to my regular exit strategy. Over the Dales to Preston, down the M6, briefly onto the M56 then south through Wales on the A49. A cracking road which allows a fast pace without hauling arse down a motorway. Steve took over the lead after lunch as we started down the A49 and set a spirited pace. Not one for hanging around is our Steve. Our route split at Hereford, so we said our goodbyes and I headed for Monmouth. From there, its Chepstow down the B roads, then Usk and Caerleon before heading to the M4 at Newport for the final 20 miles.
Got off Lucy after over 8 hours in the saddle as fresh as I started out. She is truely a great bike for this kind of stuff. She carries the wieght very well never strains even when hauling some serious A road riding speeds. Love her to bits.

I'm sad and embarassed to not have made it to Dent. Sad as I was too busy with other things to remember the biking stuff and embarassed as I only live in Lancaster and could have ambled out just for the sake of saying a few hello's.
Oh well, maybe next time?
