Title: Sidecar XBR (again)
Post by: guest7 on July 27, 2009, 05:31:18 PM
I have a tired old sidecar outfit in the garage and all the good bits from my other GB500 outfit (I sold the chair from that one).

Although I will be building up an outfit with the large Busmar Astral chair that I recently bought, I want to get the XBR rig back on the road quite soon. I was intending carrying on with the old Squire that's fitted, but I have hankered after a little Velorex (like club member Richard's) for quite a while now. I kept a fair-weather eye out for one and the other day I snaffled a chassis for £16:

I knew that RobG had a Velorex chair body in his garden and I took him up on his long-running offer to have it.

It has cost, so far, £16 plus collection costs of £15. The chassis has seen better days, but it's much easier to repair something that's complete than to make something from scratch. As you can see from the picture, I'm only missing one fitting, but I can either fab one up or buy one from Dave Angel (F2 motorcycles). God knows what that wheel is off, but sorting that out should be cheap and easy.

The body looks like this:

(as an aside, the bloke who built that outfit welded a 2" thick steel plate between the chassis tubes to stiffen it up and add 81lb of ballast).

The outfit will have leading link forks carrying a 16" Honda wheel with single disk. The rear wheel will be a 15" alloy that takes car tyres. The engine is a modified NX650 motor. I'm also toying with the idea of fitting my old Powerbronze full fairing.

If any of you have a Velorex in the garage, can you tell me how the body attaches to the chassis, is it just bolted straight on or is there any form of rubber mounting?

Cheers

The one I picked up the other day had a shaped piece of wood between the chassis and body, not sure if it is standard but it seems to support and strengthen the base of the body very well.

I picked up a wheel for this outfit the other day, a proper Velorex item with brake and hubcap. The costs went up some with this purchase, the wheel (inc. P&P) came to £35.

To be fair this is on a go-slow until I have sold off all the crap in my garage, then I will have to room to work on an outfit.

An unexpected consequence of having to rebuild my GB500 in a hurry is that I will be swapping the wheels over on my outfit sooner than expected. By the end of today I'm hoping to have it on a 15" rear and 16" front. I'm still waiting for the sidecar wheel to turn up, but there's no rush in getting the sidecar chassis on yet.

I will be removing my Squire sidecar because that's earmarked for Ebay. It's done me good service over the last 11 years, but it's just taking up space now.

Today I rec'd the Velorex wheel that I'd bought on Ebay. it came complete with good rim, reasonable spokes, hub cap, brake plate and nearly new tyre... all for £10!  ;D

As for teh Squire, when it gets listed I will post teh item number.

I sat down the other night and did something I never do. I thought about how this project should flow. My Squire is essentially worthless because of the mods I've made. It's worth my while getting it back as a standard child/adult chair with luxuries like a screen you can see through. I am going to buy these bits and keep the chair attached for couple of months whilst I refurbish the Velorex off the bike. Once the Velorex is ready to go on i will remove the Squire and sell it then.

All makes sense to me  ::)

Squire want about £86+VAT for the screen for the chair (last time I asked) and this will be the only major expense. The rest of the kit is stored in the rafters of my garage.
