Thought I might as well start a report on here about the task ahead! As some of you already know, due to my personal situation, I have come to a decision, it's time to stop dreaming & actually get on with it!
Off around the world (taking as long as I want!) on an old, tatty CB500 (sitting outside under a plastic sheet) SEE PHOTOS in project section!
Plans are now underway, stuff is being sold to fund it, checks & enquiries being made & lots & lots of reading research.
I will update here as & when there is enough progress to be of interest! ::)
Check thread in forum chatter (up & away!)

Bit of an update, now that something seems to have been done at last!
Bike (CB500R 94) put in garage & most parts taken off for inspection &/or replace
Whole swing arm assy taken apart & cleaned, all looks ok including swing arm bearings, now ready to re-assemble (including new chain & sprockets DiD)
Pleased when Boyd found a "touring" Scott oiler fitted under the numberplate.
Steering head bearings re-greased & re-fitted as they seem ok! (spare ones to be taken)
Forks were too far gone £? so replaced via e-bay for £75 (good chrome)
Fork gaiters fitted at same time (a must!)
Front wheel cleaned & checked all ok including bearings, but disc, although not much wear, had a lot of hairline cracks around the holes (see photo) so brand new one obtained for £39+p&p.
Front brake stripped & cleaned (inc. pistons) & pads were scrubbed clean of oil! all back together now & seem to be fine.
Mudguard seems a little close to tyre & might cause problems when stones & mud start to stick to tyre, so the motocross one in pic might work better?
Front tyre is off my old race bike, (& should see me to Sudan?) or thereabouts, where some dual purpose tyres should be waiting at a pre-arranged place?
Clocks check out ok as does the ignition barrel & wiring.
New throttle grip fitted & cables oiled (new clutch cable too!)
Picked up a couple of hand guards off e-bay, in the process of fitting!
Same with a set of engine guards (which will prove invaluable!)
Rear wheel off e-bay (came in a job lot) & fitted with a s/h tyre from breakers for £20.
Which head lamp to fit???? MMMmmmmmm?
A few bars & brackets have been roughly painted with the first tin of paint to hand (Gold!) & might come in useful when bribing officials?
I bought a Givi touring screen but think it is a bit to heavy (unneccessary?) so will make one up from an old race screen (fitted the wrong way up?)
The exhaust is a Motad system, which seems to be in good solid condition (had to have the bracket braised though) & should be fine?
Plan to make & fit a bashplate (not much ground clearance, but I think it will be needed as the sump is very vulnerable)
The sidestand has a slightly bigger foot now!
Rear shocks are new Hagons (fitted with heavier springs as they will be working hard!)
Any questions???????????????????????

Nope! But I think this is great John, keep on with it!
Is SimonB going with you then?? Or am I getting confused?

Hi Andy,
Yes! can't get rid of him! he seems keen on the project, & time will tell, but as I have said to him, he's very welcome & it will be great to have good company for many reasons, but I will always be planning & equipping to go alone! Just in case!
Also, with us both being novices at this, there will be many problems ahead & one or the other may well decide to quit, & so both really need to be equipped for solo riding.
Biggest problem is the money, looks like I will only be leaving with around a couple of grand? having all sorts of problems with the council & the like!
