Title: ...and...?!
Post by: andy230 on June 18, 2009, 01:32:45 PM
Well, a bit of a hiatus there....  Definate loss of momentum!   :-\

Married  :-*, honeymoon   8), dying van (SOLD!  to a guy who's gouing to drive it to the Black Sea!! :o)

I am going to back-track a bit, and remove the super-duper Silent-Hektik ignition system, and go for a less super-duper Ignitech which I got for the project from Ash.

This will necessitate the use of the standard engine cover and flywheel.  Plus there are no "variables" as the pick up is fixed, and the flywheel goes on a key-way.

I wonder if the presence of the big heavy flywheel may also make a difference to low-speed running...

I won't be giving up quite yet!

Will let you know,

I'll make your losses smaller - £5....

Umm I will also go home early to make up for being late...

Chaps...

Don't tempt me!

I will try it with the alternative ignition set-up, and if it still wont give *usable* power (ie. what I was hoping for- like the 620, nice and linear, just with a bit more) then I would think that the cam is probably a bit much for the motor and it wants a hi-comp piston.  (Currently flat-topped).

Then, it will probably want dyno'd to set it up just right.

If its change the cam, that means cash.  Or a piston= cash.  Then the dyno= cash. I also need spacers for the 2nd set of wheels.  And a decent paint job.  Blah blah blah.

You know when you're in too deep to get out?!  I dont mind the time, but I have to draw a line somewhere with the money.  So I will do cheap things first, as I already have the ignition.

Cheers for now

Congratulations old chap - excellent and well done!!

Why are you taking out the existing ignition - what would Bill say?

Hi Steve,

Well, its just something to try...  Isn't good with Bills, I find that a bit complicated, the motors previosu incarnation ran with the Ignitech, Bills ran a 5v head and an adapted BMW system.

I figure too many people havbe now sid to me to use the Ignitech.

So I shall, and that should tell me (or at least give me a clue) as to if its the wild cam or not....

cheers mate

(and thanks for the words!)

(sticking fingers in ears, “LA-LA-LA-LA”)

Time to take your fingers out of your ears and check the cam timing?

The flat top piston will rob you of some bottom end power because of the reduction in effective compression ratio, your problem sounds a lot more severe than this though, check the valve timing, check the TDC mark you're using is accurate and then check ignition timing. Popping and banging could well be ignition timing or you may have bent the valves again, what timing are you running?
The flywheel will make a big difference to bottom end power but maybe not that much at 4500rpm.

heh-heh!  well, maybe...   ;D

Check the valve timing, check the TDC mark you're using is accurate and then check ignition timing.

Will check it with the 2nd ignition system, before dropping the motor again.  Am pretty certain the valves aren't bent, its making good power up top.

But the cam timing could be slightly out.   However, with the cam wheel "as-is" it was good in a previous incarnation of the motor.

When I get a woodruff key for the crank and stick the old flywheel back on, will report back.

cheers
