evening,
does a car type alternator need a charge passed through it to generate electricity?
i'm thinking of trying to make a battery charger, powered by the rain water comming down the drain pipe from the garage roof.

Yes I'm pretty sure. When I have had fully discharged batteries in the past it is virtually impossible to bump start a car as there is no power to the alternator itself. Just how much rain are you expecting, some sort of torrent! :P

i'm expecting about 6 months of rain from now on!
i've already considered gearing it up or down, i don't want to power the house just a bike battery.
the other option was getting a Cub90 alternator, which i think can operate with no initial charge- although i'm sure the output is alot less.
