Title: 660 cam timing marks
Post by: bullet350 on November 17, 2007, 05:45:42 PM

still doing battle with my friends skorpion trying to get the bugger running.

i've had the cam out again to play with the decompressor components, and now it works. although i think its working too soon or too late as the battery still won't push it over TDC.

i've come to the conclusion that the cam must be 'out' in relation to the crank.

there are two marks on the flywheel/alternator, and three marks on the cam, trouble is i don't know which marks need to be where.

starter motor has been replaced with a known good one, and the battery is enough to start a bmw boxer.

anyone know which marks to use?

thanks

Installing steps.
Turn the crankshaft counterclock wise until the TDC mark ( last mark )
Camshaft cam lobes down ward decompresser at 12 O'Clock.
cam sprocket has 2 marks which should be parallel with cylinder head.
Keeping the cam chain taught on the exhaust side.

See if that helps ?

xbrmz,

there are two marks on the flywheel, the last if turned anticlockwise is an H shape, do i just centre this in the inspection hole?

thanks for the help so far, this is possibly the first time i have ever wished i had a haynes manual to hand.

As a rough guide your valves shopuld be on the overlap.ie the Exhaust closing and the Inlet opening as the piston it pretty much TDC This may only be within  a tooth  but would show if your a long way out.

Was having a surf for manuals and found these sites that may help others and also a VW manuals site for those who run these.

I've got 3 marks on mine ,just a line after the H.
There isn't a haynes for these  >:(
Try and down load a manual for the XTZ / SZR 660 , Only difference is the MZ on the clutch cover
