Title: SRX400E
Post by: guest24 on September 13, 2007, 02:27:28 PM
After horrendous deliberation and waffling (see all my chatter threads) about buying a new bike I have changed my mind (again) and have started to work on my SRX400E yet again. It’s been a paltry 4 years since it last ran and this time it has to work or its going to go on eBay piecemeal.

So, back to basics and ignoring all previous attempts I started my investigations. One quick spark test later I conclude the coil has sparked its last decent fat blue spark. Now sourcing a new coil and will even treat my beast to a new plug & cap while I am at it. No expenses spared here.

If I feeling particularly inclined, I may clean the carbs out again. Who knows what have grown in the bowl since last summer? I expect it to be a brown rusty looking monster. If I could sell fine rust as a cleaning agent I could make a fortune!

Next update when I have my new coil and done another spark test.

Hi MAte

I have a few coils.  Well, a spare one, and another spare.  For the racing, but you can borrow one for a while if you like?  Not sure, but I think they work!

Easy to test anyway!  Also have a wee tank from a monkey which I use rather than humf a tank on and off all the time.

You're in london right?  Am in finchley, just on norff circ.  Come and get em if you want.

Cheers for now, catch you later.  Good luck!!

The CDI wouldn't be the same, but I figure a coil is a coil....  Let us know how you get on!

Good luck!

We ran both bikes on the track, & found that the 400cdi worked on the 600, & the 600cdi on the 400, with no noticeable problems!,   (although we didn't use all the wires).

Ditto the generator thingy in the n/s crankcase!

Also the coil / ht lead & plug cap....... :)

woohoo! eBay bits arrived today. If I get a chance before it gets too dark I will try out the coil for its sparkiness ability this evening. Failing that, its going to be the weekend. :-\

OMG! It runs!

I have tried out my new eBay bits, namely an ignition coil and CDI unit, and have been successful. Had to strip the carbs again, and steal (not literally as I pay for it) petrol from the wifes CBR, and away it went. No airbox on so was a bit noisy and even better news is that the exhaust was still sound. Smoked like a trooper as all the WD40 started to burn off. Ho ho.

Bits that need fixing now are:
1. the mouting point for the coil as one of the rubber grommits has perished.
2. a new tank unless I can cure the rust problem
3. new battery
4. new throttle cable for closing carbs
5. mot, tax & insurance
6. new oil
7. maybe new tyres
8. write this all up properly for the club mag.   :D

Yippee! Got myself organized enough to meet up with Andy and hand over my tank for repair. He reckons about a week and then it will be on eBay :o  Methinks he is a bit of a wag! He is also a splendid chap for saying he will fix it  ;)

Thats one more thing off the to-do list to get my beast back on the road.

Hello mate-

Clean it out with lots of fresh petrol (I know its dear, but you gotta flush it!)

It won't get clean (if the tank was like Bruce's!!), but it will be slightly clean-er after a few litres...

Rattle some nuts n bolts about (carefully) I put them on a bit of wire, and tied a bit of string to that to fish em out.

Flush again!  Try to get it as clean as you can.

Then connect the filler to your bike/car exhaust.  Run engine to heat & dry the tank.  Leave it for at least a day, somewhere fairly warm and dry.  Not an outside garage in this weather.

Do a couple of tests with your epoxy of choice.  Petseal is very good.  Others are available.

Fix the leak from the outside first (fibreglass/epoxy/"PetroPatch")

Seal from the inside ensuring full coverage of tank.

Wait to dry!  I had a *very* nervous week with Bruce's tank on top of my boiler.  It eventaully went off, but I was envisaging a "I'm terribly sorry mate" type of conversation and having to buy him a new tank!!! :o

But it did set eventually

And I think he's happy?  Is she a runner yet Mr G????

Cheers for now

andy

ps.  Alternatively, as I told bruce, try to find another tank.  But good ones are like hens teeth, so I wish you luck

I thought at first you were refering to the tank on my Norton when you mentioned the name Bruce my petrol tank is still the same one when I bought the bike in 1972 and it does not leak.

Hello mate!

my petrol tank is still the same one when I bought the bike in 1972 and it does not leak.

Of course it doesn't leak.  It was made to hold petrol!  Not to be a shiney thing atop the frame rails to help sell a motorcycle....

It was shiney when new I imagine Chrome plated you can still see some of the chrome if you look carefully  but it hasn't rusted away on the inside

Finally
1. It runs and is road legal
2. I have reported it here

Madly, like its owner, it cant hold its drink. New petrol tap rubbers on order to stop it spewing the fuel out. Ho hum.
