Title: Winter camping weekend in Wales
Post by: guest7 on September 10, 2007, 08:31:21 PM
Last November a bunch of us met up at Llanthoney Priory for a drink and a natter. there's a basic campsite and a bar in the cellars of the old priory. That's all, but we managed to have a laugh.

So, this year I'd like to do it all again. Pencil in Saturday 24th of November for a night of sleeping rough and talking nonsense. The camping is available every night of the week so you can stay there for longer, or arrive earlier, if you like.

Mail me for details, but it's easy to find the Priory if you look for it on a map between Abergavenny and Hay on Wye.

All being well I will attend Graham you might need your camera for your Camp Stove Website I now have a Festival Of Britain 1951 Teapot and a British Empire Exhibition 1924 Lipton Brass Tea Caddy and if I can remember I will bring them with me.

Marvellous stuff... but how do you cook? Do you use one of those modern gas things? If so then I can complete your ensemble with a natty Paraffin 'Primus' Stove.

Let's face it, I've got too many and it's about time I gave some away.

Graham,

I have got a 1/2 pint Paraffin Stove but I prefer to use my Coleman Petrol Stove (always got spare fuel in the bike tank)

Well if I cannot get a Zep ticket I will try to get a pass to come over and whinge on about how I should be in London blah blah blah.  Was really looking forward to trying to get along and then LZ announce their one and only date.  (Shortest reform ever?)

I warn you all, there is talk of getting there Friday and setting off early Saturday to Hay for a session in hired canoes, followed by lunch and a leisurely return to the site.

Cheers

Symonds Yat here they come - mind youare not supposed to go down the Yat in the hire canoes.  Saracens Head is a great pub by the Yat, and the camp site (canoeists not family) is OK too.

Sounds like a plan, and the cost will be?
Apart from the cost of beer and the camping.

I mailed one of Hay's canoe hire companies and they said:

You can take two canoes (2-3 seat) or two canoes and a kayak, or other combinations.

In late November it might be worth looking at the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal rather than the river, as river levels can be high in winter.

I haven't asked them about costs yet, but I will.

The Monmouth Brecon canal is a nice one - we have paddled it a few times, very pretty and the aquaduct near Brecon is - umm - interesting to paddle.  The Wye can get filled in Winter - which makes it fun....

The downside of the Canal is that it has no current - or very little - and thus you have to paddle all the way.  The upside is that there are a few pubs that back on to it and can be seen as stops.

Did not see the whole account on the TV - but some of the Brecon - Monmouth canal has fallen out of its banks and into some houses - may impinge on a nice day.

The problem was in Gilwern (near Abergavenny), they are unlikely to get much further than the first pub, let along paddle to Gilwern

Update on canoeing: I am unable to get to Llanthony until early Saturday morning so I can't see it happening. Also, they wanted to chuck us into the Brecon and Monmouthshire canal and that's probably a bit further than we intended travelling (with hangovers).

Jethro, Julian and Tim will be onsite on Friday though.

I am tempted. Is there any food on site or would I need to bring my stove?

The pub does meals in the evening, but I'd recommend a stove for lunch and brekkie.

If all goes to plan I might be bringing my big family tent (for us to sit in) and perhaps a big pot of stew. I'll let you know.

Cheers

Will you be bringing the zed or pulling one of the HT leads off the Bonnie Andy?
Title: Re: Winter camping weekend in Wales
Post by: Andy M on November 08, 2007, 03:26:27 PM
I'm getting too old (or lazy) for the amount of gear one can carry on the zed, so it'll be three wheels for me. Once it rains, the Bonneville tends to run on one cylinder anyway, Hinckley still puts the coil in the same stupid place Meriden knew didn't work in 1963   :(

If you are coming too, I'll bring the photo album of the Zed "restoration" though.

Three wheels? Is that a trike, reliant or God forbid a combo?

Look forward to boring everyone else witless with Zet chatter. If I come on the Zed I'll demo how to carry gear on a zed,

Steve

The Bonneville is now paired with a Ural chair. British reliability (Ok simple to fix unreliability) coupled with the ability to lug a huge amount of gear, some of it bolted to the outside (leaves space for the dog (Although he'll not be coming this time)!).

I tried loading the black zed (before I siezed it) with the gear for the Elefant. Filled one pannier just with the sleeping bag. As there was no room left for such essensials as the tea pot and cocktail glasses it was going to be a very rough trip  :'(

Looking forward to it  :)

Woohoo, looking forward to this weekend  ;D

I can't get there until Saturday morning, but I should be bringing the big tent so there should be some cover for chinwagging and eating if it's raining.

With any luck they'll have run out of beer.

Not that I'm jealous or anything of course ;-)

Thinking about going over today - spoke to the Farm - apparently the campsite is near full - they have a polo event or something on over there - so pub is probably full - of delightful young ladies in tight johdpurs.....

Do you think GC will be safe?

And it would appear that we went to the wrong campsite... no sign of polo players at Llanthony  :(

But the arrival of a bunch of 6th form girls dressed up for a night out served to demonstrate in what a desperate state some overweight, middle aged men find themselves. I regret that it was all too potent a demonstration of alcohol fueled inadequacy.
