My back wheel will fail it's next mot because the breaking is irregular and apparently this is because these wheels tend to rust from the inside out. Can anyone advise me where i can get another one and is second hand OK or do i need to buy a new one?

You can get lucky and find a good one second hand, but it is a common fault so take care in buying.

What do you mean by "irregular" ? Do you mean it pulses up through the brake pedal like the drum has gone oval ? Or do you mean sometimes it works better than other times ?
If its the former it will probably still pass MOT, aslong as it works well in a stationary brake full on test, and then fully releases with no binding. As they dont do a brake test with the bike on the move for the MOT test.
I can understand that you might want to get it sorted anyway.

Yea it pulses. On last mot the meter needle was eratic and mechanic only passed it on understanding that i would get it sorted, do you know any reliable sites to buy from?

Did you take it somewhere with a proper brake roller thingy ? , if so take it somewhere with the more usual steel cable wind up scales.
I take all my bikes to a small long est test station where all the polishing brigade take their english classics, makes my jap classics look like cutting edge technology.
Sorry dont know anywhere to try other than ebay or breakers, but you could end up with another wheel no better !

A good motor engineer can put it on a lathe and skim off the bad bits if it isn't too far gone.

I've had this done and it can work but the drum materiel is *very* thin :( I was using an excellent local company and one skimmed ok, the other cracked... if it's knackered anyway it might be worth a try but remember once it's cracked your only recourse would be finding a classi/restoration place that might be able to create/fit a new lining inside the hub, and is an XBR wheel worth that much work?

There are a pair of XBR wheels on Ebay - 130030186742 Buy it now £40. no guarantee that the back is any better than yours but may be worth a look.

Just occurred to me that Honda are still making a retro 400 single very like the XBR, and it might have a drum brake on the back. If it's the same size, they must have liners. The iron is probably 'frozen' into place, so if the hub is heated to about 350F it should drop out. Should. Maybe. We used to change cast-iron liners on Honda barrels with that sort of heat.
