Title: fried battery
Post by: Anna on August 14, 2006, 10:45:51 AM
hi guys, does anyone know what a 1991 electric start srx6 should charge at? When checking battery voltage without engine running its showing 13 volts, with the engine running and at around 2500rpm its showing 14.2 volts. This is the second battery on it and its leaking, is it because the battery is being over charged? Any ideas anyone?

The spec for the twinshock bike is here

I would image the monoshock would be close to this

Is it overfilled (with electrolyte)?

Shouldn't leak...

Not sure if its overcharging.  I had similar to this on a Norton twin- I was in the middle of france, and the battery was dying.

On investigation it was VERY hot and started to boil dry.  I had to keep all the lights on as it was (apparently) un-regulated.  Got back to the UK tho...

Anyone else??

Could be over charging !

A Buggered.......Sorry !That should read.....A Bu@@ered regulator/rectifier ususally causes that.
Sometimes the alternator, but hazard a guess and say the Reg/Rectumfrier.

14.2V isn't that high really, but could be a symptom of poor earthing of the reg/rec. I run an extra earth wire from one of the mounting studs to the frame. I'd also check how good the battery earth is. If the voltage doesn't climb any higher with revs, the reg is probably fine. Multimeters are surprisingly variable in accuracy, so you may be reading high or low by as much as half a volt even with a good one.

When mine was frying batteries it was reading @ 18v on three different multimeters. should be between 12 & 15. A replacement reg/rec cured mine but I tried three before I found one that worked properly.
good luck mart
