Has anyone tried to lighten a piston by removing material from the underside or the skirt.
-
I haven't tried it myself, but I'm guessing this is a case of "You have really got to know what you are doing!" Modern pistons are a lot shorter than "classic" engine pistons. Sorry I can't be of help really.

I have seen it done, you will need access to a mill and you really have to know where the stresses on the piston are, There are very few advantages to doing this though as if its a single you are never going to rev it hard enough to see any advantage of lightening it, in a multi cylinder engine it can help you ballance the masses which could get you a few more rpm's

what are you hoping to achieve by this?
