I'm rebuilding my GPZ500S project but am struggling with a job I hate as above. I have a spring puller (no good), have tried screwdrivers and the old dodge of putting washers in the spring but all to no avail. I've watched some YouTube vids but seen nothing I want to risk trying at the moment.......

Mole-Grips?
Spring puller has always worked for me, or the washers between the coils.
Have you tried using two nails, one into the shed/garage door frame and another near to the outside edge of the door? Put the spring over the nails, bent if you prefer, and then use the door to open the coils, so that you can fill it with washers/plywood spacers.
Sorry not to be more helpful. All the best and don't put a spring in your eye! :o :-[

Pain of a job for sure, sometimes literally. In the past I have left the stand unbolted to the frame but attached the spring to the frame and stand, giving me much better pulling holds. Then by locking on one of the brakes and getting an assistant ready with the stand bolts/spindle I have levered one side in and then the other. Can't say it would work on every stand as it needs room to wiggle etc, but worth a try?
Good luck.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Another is to put the bike on the side stand and lift centre stand up towards the swinging arm to try to secure the spring.
I'll give these ideas a go thanks.

All sorted now. I got the bike on the side stand and using a bungee to hold the centre stand up I was able to use my spring puller to install on the locating lugs.

Excellent, when the plan works and you still have 10 digits! ;)

Yes, all very straightforward with little risk of digital damage keeping the spring puller under controlled tension. Spent the afternoon battling corroded / broken metal fixings in rear plastic mudguard-oh what fun.Getting on with the resto though.

Great result, you make it sound easy. My own method involves brute force, ignorance and an abundance of expletives 🤣
