Not one of my thumpers but on my 750 Monster double thumper. It's a single piston Brembo underslung type of caliper on the rear. It's always been "notchy" so I've tried to bleed it today and can't now get any pressure in the system. I've tried removing the caliper from its mount and raising it up ,bleeding from the master banjo all to no avail. Piston seems to be pushed back in its bore and no sticking / disc overheating problems. Any ideas or tips please?
-
Aye xbally,
I would suggest leaving the caliper low down and raising the master cylinder, with the rod compressed, overnight and see what happens!
Hopefully, this will dislodge the air bubbles in the system. But the fact that your mention the action being "notchy" would make me suspicious that the old brake fluid needs draining and master cylinder cleaning of any gritty bits and a new set of seals, before re-assembly and filling with new fluid.
Having never tampered with Ducati V twins and only singles drum brakes makes me very unqualified on this subject! ;) :-[ ;)
Good health, Bill
-
Thanks Bill.
I'll give that a go.
Just want to get the rear brake working for the moment and afterwards I can get the whole system overhauled -as you say it seems to need it.
-
I have a cheap vacuum pump brake bleeding kit from eBay which has transformed the whole bleeding experience for me...
-
Have you tried reverse bleeding the brakes? It's the way I do it.

ive got and frequently used a vacuum bleed kit to some good effect.
-
I use a cheap plastic syringe connected to the bleed nip ple via a piece of rubber tubing. This works for me.

thats the one, ive used it a lot more than i thought it would. also used it on my van!.
-
I have one as well and it was the only effective way of bleeding the linked brakes on my Guzzi V50. The ebay ones aren't particularly well made (at least mine wasn't) but fine for occasional or even one-off use.

Yep, that's it!

Thanks to all....Update: By crimping the hose close to the master and bleeding from the banjo at the master and then from the caliper I was eventually able to get pressure at the lever. However the
caliper pistons are definitely sticking as I've just been for a quick run-and even without using the rear brake the disc is much hotter than the front. I struggled to get the caliper back on the disc -pistons didn't want to move back. Martin
-
Well now I've got a puncture as well-happy days. Think I'll get a syringe kit which should make life easier in the future. These bikes also have a hydraulic clutch.

Martin, drugs are NOT the answer my friend.... battle on through the pain 😉😉
-
Bleeding joker!
-
In the words of The Verve I think it was: the drugs don't work but the brake does.Well the puncture has been repaired and the rear wheel now appears to spin freely after applying the rear brake. Still have to road test though. Let's hope there's no bitter sweet symphony?

Martin... I’m loving the “verve” references 🤘🤘

Yes back to the late 90's Michael IIRC? Seems like only yesterday-was that the Carpenters?

Thanks Tommy.Most kind.
-
is this the same as yours xbally
-
Tommy-thank you. Here is a pic of my caliper. Martin
-
hi martin bit different no good to you eh tommy
-
That's what I thought. Not to worry. Thanks very much for your kind offer Tommy.
-
Tommy. Have you changed the standard silencers on your Interceptor? Thinking of swapping mine to lose a bit of weight and hopefully increase driveability.I don't mind the sound or look of the OE pipes though. Martin
-
i put s+s pipes on mine ,just the end cans , header pipes are now available for them now from s+s ,to be honest i think the stock exhaust sounds pretty good ,but the new pipes sound great i also changed the air filter i dont think i gained any power increase but the bike does fell a little more responsive at take off or maybe it just sounds better ;D theres a company in australia drag racing one they have a u tube channel ,,,,revelry racing worth a look tommy
-
Thanks Tommy.I've ordered the Norman Hyde peashooters as they weigh a lot less ,look good and sound a bit but not too much rortier.I agree the standard exhausts look and sound OK I've done the filter mod so hopefully the exhaust will aid pick up in low / mid range a bit. Have not done the mixture enrichment mod as yet as mine seems to fuel pretty well. May change the fork springs next. I don't ride hard so to date have found rear shocks OK.
-
changing the fork springs is porobably the best thing to do on the bike great improvment
-
Exhaust cans have arrived so will get them fitted over Easter. Just looking into which fork springs to get.will be taxing it tomorrow.
-
h martin i have the yss fork kit works great tommy
-
Thanks Tommy. You seem to be going for the top quality after market goodies.SWMBO won't be a happy Easter Bunny if I spend too much on "fripperies"!Not that she rides pillion these days.
-
ha yeah for once i had a few quid for a new bike and i was all set to get a new xt 700 i took a test ride on one ,and it was a nice bike that mt motor is very nice but after a test ride on the enfield i went for that leaving me a bit of cash to get some bits for the interceptor and the xbr got some goodies too and i still had enough for a few beers and a curry , ;D tommy

Shows how up to date I am on current bikes-I had to look up the XT. (Images of a retro XT500 in my mind). You have spent the spare cash very wisely Tommy.Beers and curry always a bonus too. What do you get for the XBR? Ooops -I seem to have highjacked my own thread.Isn't it great when you have spare cash to spend as you like. Well the Ducati rear brake now seems to be working OK to come back on topic. Not sure how I fixed it? Am hoping to take the RE650 out for the 1st time this year today.
-
the xbr got treated to a 40mm carb and a jack batson exhaust funny how it works out new bike and a few quid to spare then a few months later bad bike accident i,m smashed up and skint again , :o glad you got that brake sorted out might have been a air lock some where enjoy the run on the 650 tommy
-
Thanks Tommy. So sorry to hear of your bad luck > I knew several folks on here have had bad accidents but didn't realise one of them was you. Hope you are on the mend now .Must be very disheartening. Yes I fitted the new exhaust on the Interceptor today before I went out to cut my elderly parents grass. Easy bolt on job and massive weight saving. Aren't the standard silencers heavy. Bike sounds a bit fruitier now particularly on the overun. Couldn't detect any increase in performance but I think I have been spoilt by my 750 Monster which is a bit of an old school beast by comparison-the RE is pretty civilized-even with the in take and exhaust mods.Did the XBR mods make much difference?
-
Which XBR got the goodies, Tommy? And did either of you RE buyers swing a leg over the W800?

I didn't try the W800 Matt as I used to own a W650. Great looking bike but I found mine a bit lacking in character. It was quite old when i got mine and had a few minor issues IIRC- a a small oil leak from the bevel drive and the odd electrical gremlin.
-
Cheers, Martin. Any thoughts on Guzzi's new V7 with the 850 motor and 63bhp?
-
not a big fan of the w800 tbh i have seen some really nice 650,s you can do alot to these bikes , the carb and pipe made a hugh difference to the xbr just on acceleration and mid range power about 2500-3000 rpm the bike just shoots foward love it tommy
-
I'm pretty out of touch with most of the modern bike scene these days Matt.No I hadn't seen the new V7. I've just googled it and it does look good. I liked the V7 I sold to Michael (Moto63) and would consider another- I do like the Guzzi V twins and I would think the extra horses will make them even better.
-
Thanks for the responses - been doing a lot of window shopping! Those RE's seem to have a lot of aftermarket support. Glad to hear the XBR is flying, Tommy 😎
-
Yes top news on your XBR Tommy. Not so good news about the accident, all the best with your recovery. 🤞👍
Cheers, Michael

The RE's are worth a serious look Matt.As you will have seen the price is ultra competitive. You can leave the bike standard-it's perfectly adequate as it comes but if you want to tinker / upgrade as you've found there is a large developing market. Hitchcock's used to be the main source but everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon now.The RE's are much cheaper than most of the competition and IMHO better value for money.

If only I could get past the shape of the lump?? For some reason, it just doesn't do it for me. Looks a bit squashed down.
Anyhow, I have been lusting after a Guzzi, mostly either of the Grisos and even toyed with the idea of a Harley Roadster for a while - helps to pass the time. In terms of one lumpers, I was very keen on going slower on an Enfield Classic 500 and then I thought about going faster on a KTM Duke 690.
-
Well you're certainly considering all options. The KTM690 is pretty manic. The exact opposite of the classic RE 500 single-the EFI (UCE) has a much more modern feel. The Grisos are great but very heavy. I think the 4 valve 12200 Griso has some engine issues. I had a new 1100 Griso for my 50th birthday. Nice bike but too heavy for me now.
-
MY mate has stripped the rear brake today and one of the pistons wasn't fully moving due to a bit of corrosion. All cleaned and re-greased now.
-
Greased? With castrol red rubber greae I hope......
-
Yes Ian-mate is a very experienced bike / car mechanic so have no worries there.
-
That's good - I read a lot about people using copper grease for this sort of thing, for which it's entirely unsuitable.
