Title: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: mthee on May 17, 2016, 09:09:20 AM
Here are Michael's pics with titles;

A side on shot complete with mock up front spoked wheel and suzuki GS500 front forks. Hopefully shud be a cool bike once it's finished. Really motivated now to get it done for October stafford show.
This first pic was taken quite a while ago when I first had it on the bench, I was supposed to be getting some cnc stuff done by a local guy but he let me down big time. (Another story)

A pic of the fully stripped and rebuilt engine, it's now bored to 600cc high comp piston and HRC profile cam. Shud hopefully be a peppy little thing.  Ps this is one bit I can't take any real credit for, I have all my engine work done professionally by a local'ish engine guy

The xbr bratter is going to be a cool looking bike.

The suzuki looks even better in the flesh than in the photo (on another thread).

It's good to see Mick getting back in the swing o things.

Morning chaps. First off thanks for all the encouragement, always good to get some positive feed back on what one,s doing/building. Steve some of the photos were originally taken about a year ago when I was still waiting for the bloke to cnc me some bits up.(never turned up, another story) so I took the tracker off the bench and started cracking on with the suzuki gs500. Anyway in answer it your question mate that's my (now sold :'( :'()  triumph 1050 speed triple under the sheet, you seen it riding round the island yet?? It was a black one with the full arrow "lowboy" exhaust system on it. If you look closely you can also see in another photo the rear subframe of the Harris framed ikuzawa that I bought off Graham. Still on the "to do" list.
Cheers...Michael
Ps...thanks for the vid Andy....ain't heard that song in quite a while. Still funny :)

Just a couple of photos of my "tracker" tank, the piece on the left is the bit I've cut off the bottom of the tank, giving it what I think is slightly better lines. The other pieces are of what was inside the tank, I think it was some sort of tank liner/sealer, must have been about half hundred weight in there.
Cheers..Michael

For the couple of minutes it takes me to upload to photo bucket and copy the URL across to the post, I have already been paid back many times over by yourself and others on this good forum - especially  SteveC#222 -  you could give him my beer for the XBR manual on CD alone.
However, if you're gonna insist...mine's a pint of best! Cheers, Michael!

Is that the real rough tank i sent you Michael, or was it just used for practicing on?
Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: Moto63 on June 01, 2016, 11:13:08 AM
Morning Tim. Yes mate it is the really rough tank you sent over and yes it is proving invaluable for practising on. So thanks again. The metal is wafer thin in places which is making things....err, interesting but still good for chopping up to make sure the lines of the bike are good etc before I launch into my decent tank. You should hopefully be able to see the end result at the stafford show. I'll ask Matt to post up some more photos for me as I progress with it. (If he doesn't mind?)
Cheers..Michael

Morning chaps, been working away all week so just seen the pics that Matt posted up (thanks Matt) thanks for all the positive comments, had a slight change of plan regarding the engine that's going into the "tracker" I've bought the fmx engine back off big bro so decided to drop that one in and keep my tuned XBR engine for the ikuzawa. I'll keep you all posted of any developments.
Cheers, Michael

Michael's update:
"just finished stripping my good tank ready for the de seaming to start, also got a lovely flush fitting petrol cap that I'm going to weld in while the tank is stripped back. Hopefully the next time you see a pic of it, it will be a slightly different shape and seamless"

Just a quick update really. sorry no photos yet, but I'm about half way in to de seaming the tank. All going fairly well, tricky little job tho so taking a bit longer than I thought but getting there and hopefully it'll be worth the hassle...cheers, Michael

Looking forward to seeing the results! I'd never heard of de seaming before, so am very interested to find out more. Good luck, Michael, I'm sure it'll be quality!

Morning chaps, de seaming complete, tricky job but very satisfying now it's done. I've just the the flush fitting filler cap to weld in now. Hopefully get that done some time this week, I'll send Matt some photos so he can post them up once it's done. Oh and just taken delivery of my 18inch (oo err vicar) ally front wheel, so hopefully be able to get the front end cracked on too....
Cheers Michael

Just a quick update really chaps, the tracker has unfortunately been taken off the bench for a while. I had hoped to get it completed n ready for the stafford show in October but I got to the point where I realised I wouldn't manage it. Partly because of my arm flaring up from time to time. So instead I'm concentrating on giving the ikuzawa a revamp so will be taking that down to the show in October instead now....the tracker will probably be back on the bench in the autumn......cheers, Michael

Michael's update;
"This is a pic of the XBR engined Harris engineering framed ikuzawa. It's now on the bench under going a total strip down and revamp (hopefully in time for stafford show) just gotta get rid of them pink wheels....ooo la la. I'm thinking of doing the frame red, tank just stripped back to the bare ally and a black seat hump and mudguard. I'm hopefully going to start work on forming the seat hump over the weekend."

Afternoon all....yes gents I'm a lucky man indeed to av the iki in my stable. I bought it off Graham, the man who started this very forum. I promised him I'd try n do the bike justice and rebuild it to it's former glory. (That was before my accident) i do intend to rebuild it properly at some point but for now I'm just going to give it a quick revamp for the stafford show. I'd be interested in any comments/viewpoints on my ideas about frame colour, tank, seat etc...cheers, Michael

Seat ump almost formed, one more evening should hopefully see it done. Then just got to fibreglass it up in to it's finished form. I'll ask mthee to post a photo once I've got it to that stage. So far no real snags so defo on course for stafford show.

I got in touch with Harris performance just to try and get a bit of info on the IKI, they came back with something that truly surprised me. Apparently they only produced 20 frames for mr ikuzawa.

Well after 4, yes 4 full evenings in the workshop I've almost got the dreadful blue powder coating off the petrol tank. Just needs a bit of sanding and a polish and I'll post a photo up. (Well hopefully Matt will for me ;)).....seat unit almost done, just need to give the frame a real quick lick of red paint, nothing fancy probably just a blow over for the show really as I fully intend to strip it right back this winter and give the whole thing a complete ground up rebuild with new bearings etc ready for getting some track daze in next year....cheers, Michael

Oohhhh........that's a trade secret that bit, hours and hours go into it ;) ;) ;)....to be honest the last bit is fairly true but yeah so long as you promise to sign the official secrets act Tim I'll tell all at Stafford  ;)  ;)
Ps....the ikuzawa is now completely stripped and I'm just on with a ton of rubbing down, so hopefully shud be looking ok for the show
Cheers ....Michael

Just a quick update on the ikuzawa, got the frame and swing arm painted now few more bits to do the quickly bolt it back together for the Stafford show....it won't be in show winning Nick but shud hopefully look a bit smarter than when it was blue with pink'ish wheels. Oh and I've also formed a new seat ump...hopefully see y'all there...cheers, Michael

Evening joolz, thanks for the input. Yes I'm going with the ally tank, the more I've stood and stared at it the more I agree with wot you're saying. Hopefully it'll look nice set against the red frame. Anyway best dash got some serious rubbing ahead of me :) :)
Ps...just a thanks again to Matt for popping the photo on for me, you're a gent. A pint has your name on it if you can make it to Stafford

Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: Moto63 on September 21, 2016, 09:06:08 PM
Bloody hell....who's idea was it that I would leave the tank bare ally??......just come in after approx hour n half of rubbing it down, barely touched it. I'd love to know who and why someone powder coated it in the first place, especially in the dreadful blue colour, very 90's. It'll probably be a kindda satin finish when I'm done. Mainly because of time constraints really, don't think I'll av time to polish it up properly before Stafford. Cheers, Michael
Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: JOOLZ on September 23, 2016, 07:50:23 AM
Dont give upon that tank, I recently bought a half finished SR 500 alloy tank, it was dull and grey looking with the welds still proud of the tank, so I had to file down the welds and emery out the scratches and manufacturing defects before I could even start polishing it. This has taken a couple of hours each evening for 6 weeks to get a nice polish

Evening Joolz......looking at those pics, looks like you've done an excellent job. Hats off to you.  My main problem is time, or lack of it at the moment to be honest. I have to av the bike built back up and at least looking like the real deal by the 14th October, ready for the Stafford show. I'm certainly not giving up tho, I'm just cracking on most evenings doing a bit here, a bit there. I'm fairly confident of getting it done in time. Can't beat a bit of pressure to spur one on eh :) :)....cheers, Michael
Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style

You could temporarly cover the tank in 3M wrap, any colour you like including chrome look :)
Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: themoudie on September 23, 2016, 05:48:18 PM
There is some elbow grease in that Joolz and it is looking very good.  :)  Not sure if Michael's arms are up to the potential of repetitive strain injury from using all that elbow grease. The 'brushed' alloy looks good provided its all in a longitudinal direction, unless the old felt roll with some fine carborundum paste applied is used to produce the 'engine turned' appearance; but, I suspect that maybe a stage to far for the purists.  ;)

Whatever, power to your elbow Michael, and sorry that I shan't be able to view the Iki' at first hand, the Hebrides beckon!  ;)

Good health, Bill

Hi Michael. I`m not sure what you are using as polish, I`m guessing it`s something along the lines of Autosol? I don`t know if it would be any easier or quicker, but on the ally parts of my last Harely I used T-Cut, did an excellent job with less "elbow grease" than Autosol. Dunno, may be worth trying on the underside of the tank first just in case  :-\ Look forward to seeing it!! Cheers

Morning all....first off thanks for all the advice and encouragement you chaps are giving. I spent approx two hours last night just stripping the underside of the tank of all the dreadful powder coating, plus I gave a small part of the upper side a real quick rub up (oo er vicar) with some scotch brite  and solvol (yes Steve you are correct in your assumption mate) it came up pretty good. Don't think it'll be as good as Joolz,s tank but like I say unfortunately I don't really have the luxury of time on my side. My mate is coming round this aft to give me a hand in with the engine so shud really start to take shape.    Cheers, Michael

Morning all....got the ikuzawa finished, well apart from bleeding the front brakes. I would really av liked to av rubbed the tank up a tad more but alas I,ve run outta time before Stafford. I'll ask Matt if he'd be so kind as to pop a photo up of the finished bike for anyone who isn't going to Stafford to av a look. I was on to Harris and av had it authenticated as frame number 8 out of 20 that were built.
Cheers, hopefully catch up with some of you at Stafford.   Michael

Hopefully get it roadworthy ready for next spring/summer. I haven't rode a bike for just over a year now (since my accident) and I'm itching to get back in the saddle (there's a song in there somewhere, come on all you rock fans)

Good evening chaps,   having had a bit of a "cleansing period" over the last six months, sold the ikuzawa, sold the gs500 and sold my other xbr to Martin (xbally) then bought my (very) shiny new ktm390 duke🏍🤘 I felt it was time to get the tracker project back on the bench and crack on n hopefully get it done. I've been struggling a tad with my arm in the cold weather (that's my excuse n I'm sticking with it😉) However the warmer weather is creeping in so back into the workshop on an evening I go. Hopefully get it completely finished in time for the Stafford show in October again (assuming thumper club has a stand again) I'll keep you all posted with any progress I make.
Cheers, Michael

Morning Tim.... it must be an age thing(although in my case I'm blaming a bang to the head🤕😉)  as I'm sure I did tell you all about the seat umps but can't honestly remember if I did or not 🤔🤔.
Tracker ump been done for quite some time now so can crack on mainly with transplanting some gs500 forks onto the front with some nice milled up ally yokes... cheers, Michael

Just noticed Matt has very kindly posted up the photos of my tracker tank... hopefully get round to welding it up being of next week, my latest idea is to pop some suzook gsxr600 (early model) front forks in. Atta get some yokes milled up but... hey only live once eh😉🤘🏍.. thanks Matt for photo posting.

Morning all, just a quick one. I'm back on with the street tracker project (at last) just taken delivery of some front forks, not the gs500 ones I was going to use as I sold the gs and forks went with it. I also think I've found someone who can mill me up some yokes etc so hopefully the bike will start to move on again.... I'll keep you posted,....cheers, Michael

Evening all, just a quick update really. Got the petrol tank finished, complete with flush fitting filler cap and completely de-seamed it. I'm just in the process of having an ally hub cnc'd up for the front wheel, once that is back I can get front end set up and then get some new yokes cnc'd too. When I get to that stage I'll ask Matt if he'll post a couple of photos up for me.
Very hopeful of having it built in time for the October Stafford show 🤞🤞

I can recommend an app called photo editor. A blue icon with a white camera in the middle. It has a quick and easy re sizing facility which adjusts the file size. Especially useful as the latest phones take photos with a lot of pixels!! Go on Mick, I dare ya  :P ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

Thanks Tim, I can't in this case take much credit tho. First off big bro did tech drawings for the hub extender/disc carrier and a mate of mine did the CNC'ing for me. Did it "mates rates" so not overly expensive thankfully, hopefully going to get things moving on from the middle of next week as shud hopefully have a few spare evenings to get in the old workshop.

A picture says a thousand words, isn't that the saying??.... well as the pic suggests the tracker is FINALLY moving forward again. Finally got all the welding done on the frame, more than first appears. Had frame n wheels soda blasted so ready Now to get some paint laid on. Then just waiting for my fancy smancy cnc yoke to turn up (see what I did there😁) then get it all bolted together to at least look like a motorbike, probably just in time for the Stafford show 🤞🤞... cheers, Michael

Once again thanks to Matt for posting the pic up for me. As you can see I've been spending many a late evening and a fair few weekends in the old garage getting things sorted on the bike. Still hoping to get to Stafford with it. However I may have to withdraw as we've had some not so great news regarding our daughters health. Anyway the tank is off to the spray booth on Friday, hopefully getting my fancy cnc yoke Tuesday or Wednesday so like I say if everything goes as we hope I should hopefully be at Stafford with the bike 🤞🤞

Morning chaps... many thanks for your thoughts regarding our daughter, possible kidney problems but STILL undergoing tests 🤞🤞
As regards the bike Matt, I've completely deseamed the petrol tank and added a flush fitting filler cap which I think was covered in a previous post a while back. There's been quite a bit of fab/welding work gone in to the frame, the obvious one is the rear loop which I bought in then cut and shut to suit the look I wanted, I then fabricated a little pocket into the rear of the loop to accept a mini LED rear light. I've fabbed up a couple of brackets the welded them to the rear subframe down tubes and to the crossmember above swinging arm pivot to accept the 10mm ally plate that I made to hang the oil tank from. I also made the ally footrest hangers from 10mm ally plate. I also formed the seat/seat hump. Where do I get my ideas? Good question Matt. Lots of places if I'm totally honest. Most of it comes from my head but such as the 10mm ally plate stuff I got most of the inspiration for that from big bro (propellor) all the shapes are drilled, sawn, filed and sanded by hand as are the stuff on "Norman" Andy 's mighty Enfield. The list goes on but I don't want to bore everyone. Like I say hopefully it will be down at Stafford fingers crossed🤞🤞..... cheers Michael

Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: Moto63 on September 25, 2019, 08:32:41 PM
Evening Matt... I've certainly never seen one used on an XBR before no, I did make something similar for my cafe racer to strap my waterproofs to when I went up to Scotland but that didn't actually hold the oil tank in place. I did also see something similar on a custom bike a few years ago which again was more of a cosmetic thing, so I put both ideas together and came up with the idea of holding the oil tank up with one. So now I have a custom oil tank holder upper and a waterproofs carrier all in one ... happy daze 😉🤘
Took some whittling up I'll tell ya

Oh and no it's not got a moto63 copyright on it...YET 😉👍
Cheers, Michael

Very generous, as always, thank you! I think I've got a battery in the way? It's box is held in place using the same bolts that go into the top of the oil tank.  Btw, I've definitely experienced some extra pep on the overtake around 4k with that mikuni flatslide of yours - loving that Brucey Bonus and I might fit a shorty silencer this Xmas to see if I can improve that flow. Then I can cut back the footrest hangers. One day, I might go all out for the full empty triangle... ;D

Evening chaps, first off thanks once again to Matt for pic posting 👍... well I got my yokes on Wednesday so full of excitement and couldn't wait to get front end built up, I then got the call from the "painter" that my tank was also ready. Excitement for more than this mere mortal could take 😁. However my excitement soon turned to shock when I laid my eyes on the tank. Absolutely appalling job. Terrible finish, not painted as I'd asked, in short just dreadful. Defo have to be re sprayed 😡😡.
As you can see tho it's finally taking shape. Roll on spring 👍.. cheers, Michael

Evening chaps, yes, yes it’s still on going. However due to the fact I’ve agreed to take it down to Stafford in July I thought I’d bettter sort out the dreadful paint job on the tank. So earlier today I took it down to a recommended paint shop. Fingers crossed it comes back as I’ve asked for it this time. Hopefully get to do a couple more bits n pieces on it before Stafford but unfortunately still mega busy on our house build so it defo won’t be finished by then... 🤣🤣🤣

Nice! I'm glad the rotten paint job didn't put you off those colours. What were the defects btw?
Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: Moto63 on June 10, 2021, 06:12:22 PM
. What were the defects btw?
Well because I’d deseamed the tank I didn’t want to grind to much of the weld down as I might have compromised the weld/strength and possibly caused it to leak. Plus when I’d tig’d in the flush fitting filler cap the plate i tig’d it into was slightly dished so that again the weld around the edge of the plate to the tank could be ground down slightly, so again not to compromise the weld to much. So I asked the original bloke to just pop a tiny bit of filler around the edge of the tank and to pop a bit in around the filler cap welded in plate. He did neither. You could still see where I’d welded both the filler cap plate in and some of the deseaming weld. I’d done a fairly neat job so it wasn’t massively apparent but you could see it more in certain places than in others. I’ll forward you a couple of photos from when I’d welded it all up and you probably understand what I mean. Plus the general finish was worse than I could have done using rattle cans. 🤦???

WELL.... after a good few years of delays due to varying reasons. My accident mainly, then embarking on our house build. I can finally start to get a couple of hours here n there on my tracker. First off is getting the exhaust welded up and a mounting bracket fabricated and welded on. I’m hoping to get this done ready for the Stafford show in a few weeks time🤞

Well. I finally got a bracket made and the exhaust all welded up, so that’s one job sorted and done ready for the Stafford show at least. Hopefully going to try and get the brackets cut and made for the (levitating) front mudguard this week if I can get the time 🤞
Title: Re: XBR Street Tracker - Moto63 style
Post by: Moto63 on April 18, 2024, 06:50:31 AM
Well... the levitating front mudguard no longer Levite’s. In the Knick of time I managed to bend and weld up 4 mudguard stays for it to nicely attach itself too. Just need a lick of black spray paint (which I don’t think I’ll get time to do before the show) then that’ll be another job ticked off the list.
Cheers, Michael
