Title: SRX 400 refurb
Post by: Steve Lake on March 23, 2023, 09:56:03 AM
my new acquisition (SRX400) is in need of full bearing replacement. wheels, sprocket carrier, headstock, swing arm. i'm slightly confused as the wheels are tri spoke, and the front is 17" (with a larger single disc). the rear is 18", the bearings all look the same as the 600 twinshock, but my cheapo plastic micrometer isn't the best thing to be measuring them with.
i've located needle roller headstock kit, which is the same for the whole twinshock range. i'm also going to need seals.
no great rush, as it's all going off to be powder coated, painted etc. but i would like to know your favourite suppliers.

thanks in advance

Morning Steve,

"Simply bearings": Simply_bearings_link (https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/)

Or, my local bearing factor, Dundee bearings, have always been able to obtain everything required.

Your 17" front and 18" rear is the standard set up for the 87-88 SRX 400cc twin shock, those wheels are fitted to Sally and there is nothing "odd" about the bearings, I will see if I have the numbers written down and post later.

Out on the Duke on Sunday for a canter out to Killin, very quiet and the roads all dry and salt free after a very driech Saturday. Silly old sod forgot the jumper under the jacket, so cooled to the core after the 80 odd miles. Home made broth with a wee nip sorted that out!  ;)

Refurbishing a BMW exhaust system and a PC50 that we have had since 1981, so a wee bit clarty! Sally needs her top end inspected and I have thought about installing a 400cc motor, easier to kick over, smoother and more mpg, for very little loss of "real world" performance, or is that cobblers?

Keep a troshin bor, time to dibble your earlies in, if you have them chitted!  ;)

Good health, Bill

As promised Steve,

Front wheel bearings and seals:
Bearings: 6302-2RSH x 2
Seals:22 x 42 x 7 TC and 45 x 56 x 6 TC

Rear wheel:
Offside bearing: 6303-2RS C3
Not replaced others.

Sprocket carrier: 6304-2RS
Outer oil seal: 32 x 52 x 7

Tyres: Front: 100/80 x 17
N.B. Tried a 110/80 x 17 and it wallowed and rolled everywhere, whilst picking up on "Super single" wheel ruts and longitudinal planing grooves, enough to waggle the bars and give tank slappers!

Rear: 120/80 x 18

With Avon, I am not sure what is going to be the outcome of the take-over by Cooper Tyres (Goodyear)? TGA Racing at present have secured supplies of Avon racing compound tyres, but for how long I am not sure?

This is a link to the TGA Racing website: TGA_Molnar_racing_website (https://www.tga.co.uk/)

Good health, Bill

As it happens Steve. My arl gran Did used to tell me “not to cast mi clout till May was out”
Din’t know for years what the hell she meant. Bet I was in my late 20’s before I found out that a “clout” was an item of clothing. A thick coat if I understand correctly 🤔

you're right Michael ... from Bodleian library..

The word clout is an Old English word for clothing with the saying serving as a reminder to not be quick in chucking or putting away winter woolies until May is out.

 ;D ;D ;D ;D

G'day

I tend to operate best below 20°C and when surveying on the hill used to rely on internal warmth, rather than multiple layers. Also, these days I find that a bandana/snood is worth at least a couple of layers. 50% of body heat is lost from the neck and napper areas!  :o The Norfolk flag one from Giraffe [Norfolk_flag_bandana (https://giraffeuk.com/shop-all/norfolk-county-flag-full-bandana-multi-functional-headgear-tube-scarf-g-713/)] is cracking. All the other County designs are really cheery as well!

My neighbours, 66 year old twins, into Fergies, Internationals, plooin' and Land Rovers, never remove a cloot, or a bonnet, even when it exceeds 25°C!  :o  I just seek shelter or slip a shirt on, slap the sunscreen on and slop a wide brim hat on and make a ginger beer shandy. That old Aussie, slip, slap, slop advert!

My Grandmother, North Devon born, never used the word cloot, but I still have a wool jumper she knitted me and very warm it is too after 55 years.

How to get from bearings and seals, to sartorial elegance in one thread!  ::)  ;)

Good health, Bill

here's a little problem/opportunity for you Bill, several of my grey import SRX's have had the air valve in the top of the fork. well, my spare set of forks have that too ... erm... i should say did, i dropped one and sheared off the valve. now, the valve itself is available from yamaha japan special order long lead time 23X-23190-L0 (an eye watering £28 !!). the cap, also broken is no longer available 10M-23184-01.
my query is, are there any valves around from different applications that would fit ?
Over to you Bill me old beauty, i know you probably have at least half a dozen in your spares holding :-)

maybe a different valve, and modify the valve cap ? any other suggestions are more than welcome ...

just sent 2 pairs of fork stanchions away for rechroming, eta 5 weeks, £150/pair. will report back when i see the finished job.
also informed the items i sent for powder coating are ready, so that's another £150 ... at this rate i'll be spending more than the estimated grand ! ....
still got the painting job to pay for , i'm reckoning on £300, 2 new tyres £150 ish £100 odds n sods from yamaha dealers. seat recovering probably £150 (getting 2 done).
it's not going to be a cheap bike when it's all done.

Where are you getting the fork stanchions done Steve? I have had a pair done each by Philpotts and Dynasurf. I think Philpotts were marginally better, but Dynasurf were slightly cheaper. Hope you get this finished for the October show??

hi Ian, yes, that's my plan, in fact i hope to have it ready for the 'fenman' bike show august bank holiday.
i found this guy for the rechroming, £150 per pair, includes insurance, carriage & vat.

i'll let you know how they turn out in about 5 weeks.

Used HCP for all of my fork stanchion re-chroming jobs and the job has always been spot-on, with proper hard chrome, ground to the correct specification, rather than the decorative stuff. Very reasonable price and relatively rapid return.

Something to bear in mind, from memory the caps on the 1JK and 1XL models have different threads.

you're right Steve, but i bit the bullet and paid up for a new valve, only 10 days from japan. it came with a cap, but not the nice silver original, just a black plastic bog standard valve cap.
so i shall trawl the blinkingnet for some nice looking substitutes.

having got my wheels back from the powder coater, i figured i'd get a pair of new boots.
my local bike workshop couldn't source bridgestone BT46's in the size i need (120/80/18 & 100/80/17) but offered me Avons.
somewhat cheaper than the BT46's. but still a total of £256.... blowing a hole in my meagre budget.
also got a quote from the metal basher for the s/s chain guard... £60 a pop ! (10 years ago the one i have on my #1 cost me £18 ! )

and a question for you tyre officionado's, iv'e never used Avons, how do they compare to bridgestones ?

once i get the fork staunchions back i can start the rebuild ...

onwards and upwards

Evening Steve, having used both Bridgestones and avons on quite a few different bikes over the years I can, from a personal point of view say that the Bridgestones are the better tyre, in just about ever aspect. All apart from wear. Being a softer compound they definitely wear out quicker but I you are the type that rides reasonable “briskly” then I’d choose the Bridgestones every time. As I’ve mentioned in another post on here (somewhere) I ran Avon road riders on my xbr cafe racer without any problems apart from a couple of rear end slides. In the wet I must say, so definitely not as stable in the wet. Cheaper tyres tho so horses for courses I suppose. I honestly don’t think you’ll have any problems with the avons but I personally never quite found them as sure footed as the Bridgestones.
Cheers, Michael

Aye Steve,

With the old BT45's you used to get some uneven wear patterns on the front tyres. I suspect because they used two different rubber compounds. The harder of the two compounds for the central tread and the softer for the two outer areas of tread.

However, because all the SRX's that I have used/owned required new tyres, I have always fitted Avon RoadRiders and more recently Avon RoadRiders2, as they are readily available and a more reasonable price than the Bridgestone Battleaxe from my local supplier. I have had wee slides from the rear in heavy rain, with low temperatures, when pushing it a bit too much. Mileage wise, the Avon's normally managed about 7,000 to 8,000 miles, with under 2mm of tread remaining and my pottering!  ;)  But having never ridden an SRX with either BT45's or BT46's, I cannot comment. Many of the people I know riding Guzzi's, Commandos etc are still using RoadRider2, without complaint.

If you prefer BT46's then 100/80x17 and 120/80x18 are available on eBay (2023-05-12) for £86-63 and £124-65 respectively and "Free P&P".

100/80x17 on eBay Lot: 295515683127 and 120/80x18 on eBay Lot: 295529366125

Both advertised by "Dennis Winters", Beverley. So you would like to think they would be "Reet!"  ;)

Good health, Bill

Michael, Bill, thanks for the info, pretty much confirms what i have been hearing. it would seem that i have paid 'top dollar' for the pair of RR II's looking at the prices Bill posted for BT46's., Still, they're a couple of decent guys running a hand to mouth operation so i'm happy to support them when i can.

keep up the good work Bill & Michael ..... diamond geezers both :-)

It would be the Bridgestones for me, but they do wear quickly (BT45's)
Title: Re: SRX 400 refurb
Post by: Steve Lake on May 13, 2023, 08:57:34 AM
up 'til now i have only ever used bridgestones (bt45's), 45's seem to be unavailable now, superseded by bt46's, which i have on #1. always been very happy with them, though i find the fronts can suffer from an irregular wear pattern in the last 1/4 of their useful life.

Aye Steve,

Thas cos its a Mono bor!  ;)

Aye Ian,

So, what do you mean by "Frighteningly" good tyres?

What mileage do they do, also would you get two rears to one front, or change both at once?

What sort of money are you talking about?

Our Mono is going for the MoT on Monday, if I am still able, after re-skinning a polytunnel this weekend! ::)

Good health to you both, Bill

Hi Bill, untill I had the S22s fitted I had only ever ridden an SRX ( both mono and twin shock, oh and one hybrid) on cross ply tyres. I always felt that the back end would never follow the front. The new fangled radial things really shook things up a bit. I found myself leaning harder and faster.... frightening myself into the bargain.
I'm a 2front for one rear rider, I must use excessive force on the front brake???.
I think the mileage per tyre is a personal thing. I don't know of anyone getting the same sort of mileage out of similar/same tyres.
Cost when I had them fitted....a bargain £180 for the front and rear fitted to loose wheels. Dunno if you'll get them for that sort of price now though. When I bought them from  "Sticky Stuff" in Telford they were cheaper than Cross Plies of same size.Hope this is of some use to Steve.

PS. Is your MOT station open on bank holiday Monday or is it different North of the Border?

PPS, just went on Sticky Stuff Website and got a quote for S22s in above sizes at £168  as a pair deal 😱

Morning Ian,

Thank you for all the info.

MoT open tomorrow, the same as any other working day up here. The Mono doesn't need new tyres, but, it won't be long and I too have been having a look at "Sticky Stuff" prices and think that they are good value for that kind of rubber. I can see me changing the Bros tyres over to the those, so as to improve Kat's confidence and because of the price of Avon RoadRider II tyres.

The early morning jockeys are out giving it laldie onm the 600's!  ;D
Quote
The Dictionary of the Scots Language (www.dsl.ac.uk) defines laldie as follows: "A thrashing, a punishment, a drubbing, generally in phrases to get or gie laldie also figurative of any vigorous or energetic action.".

Off to skin the polytunnel on a high UV, but cool morning, with a wee breeze and high cloud gathering. I have the polythene all laid out warming in the sun! ;)

Good health, Bill

2 steps forward 1 back... or maybe it's the other way round... still not located the wheel alignment plates, so to save more wasted time i knocked up a pair myself, sprayed with cold galvanising paint, not as nice as chrome, but they'll do until the originals turn up. got the right hand rearset, master cylinder & resevoir fitted, had to fabricate brackets to get correct alignment for master cyl to brake lever. looks a bit 'fussy' at present, think i'll redo the resevoir bracket.  onwards and upwards

Hi Steve, it's looking good so far. The colours look good too. I know the feeling of "1 forward, 2 back " syndrome. Bikes always look good when finished but many don't realise the heartaches and frustration that go on to achieve the end product.
Can't find the alignment brackets as yet. Couple more boxes to dig out and go through as yet!

thanks for looking Ian. bit of progress yesterday. re-fashioned the reservoir support, fitted refurbed cakiper with new pads, bled system (the absolute fastest i have ever bled srx brakes, approx 3 mins!!) fitted new chain and aligned and tightened wheel. refitted rear plastics.

another day of running to stand still ...
having been so pleased with myself in a very quick setup of the rear brake, i realised this morning that i'd forgotten to fit the hydraulic brake light switch..... doh! ... so pull it apart fit switch reassemble re-bleed waste of an hour.

still, on the bright side i made up and fitted a plate to secure the ratty old rubber/plastic chain guard at the front of the swing arm. i've done this on all the srx's as most have splits around the mounting holes and no longer work with the usual washers.

also got the l/h rearset fitted ... and here i have a small problem ... i need a pair of heel plates (the one i have fitted to the l/h rearset is manky and meant to be on the right) so another entry is about to appear in the wanted section as they are unobtaneum from yamaha.

oh, & my wonderful Koni shocks need a sleeve in the bottom eye for a correct fit to the bolt... never a dull moment.

hi Ian, yes, it's a bit of a juggling act, so much else to do this time of year... house maintenance, extensive garden, 2 cars to keep on the road .... i could go on but SWMBO informs me we are going shopping ...  :( .

i'm now just waiting on the paint job to be ready, and delivery of the rechromed stanchions ... i'm aiming to finish by the end of june...

today i will be assembling as much of the front end as i can in readiness for the forks. and cleaning pipes & silencer while i'm waiting for new studs and nuts & gaskets. oh, & hopefully pick up my sleeved koni's , oh, and sort out the wiring at the back end ... and ... and ... and
