« on: October 01, 2012, 11:54:46 AM »
CAN ANYONE GIVE ADVICE ON CHECKING THE OIL ON A SRX600, I HAVE HAD THIS BIKE FOR 7 YEARS NOW AND ON OCCASION IT SEEMS TO GO FROM BEING SPOT ON TO NEAR ON EMPTY IN A MATTER OF MINS , OR THE OTHER EXTREEM WHEN CHANGING THE OIL I HAVE FILLED IT TO THE MAX MARK, BUT THEN WHEN RUNNING IT FOUND IT TO BE OVERFLOWING WHEN CHECKING THE LEVEL A FEW MINUTES LATER?

  • Warm the bike up
  • Stop the engine
  • Hold the bike upright
  • Remove the dipstick and wipe clean
  • Replace the dipstick but don't screw it in
  • Check the level

Its a bit hit and miss. I generally just put a fixed amount in when I change the oil and then regularly check there is at least something on the dipstick.
Dont run the engine with the dipstick out, it dont arf make a mess.

Hi Steve,

I generally checked it when its cold, thanks for the reply will try your approach, I did accidently remove the bleed screw on the oil filter cover recently with the engine running that made quite a mess too.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF THE PUMP STOPPED WORKING, HOW WOULD YOU KNOW? WOULD IT CAUSE UNTOLD DAMAGE? :-\

The failure of the oil pump will never cause untold damage. The damage will be told with great chagrin.

It could be the beginning of a good song  ;)

If no more oil, everything that needs to be ... oiled will suffer : piston, crankcase, valve, cylinder, ....

If you are eager to put a new engine in your bike it's a good start to forgot oil leveling.
