I've come to the conclusion the CDI on my XBR is shot.
You tap it, it works, you tap it, it don't work!!
I've trawled for many an hour looking for CDI's and yes there are some on e-bay that are second hand and just as old as the one on my bike and selling for fifty quid up wards (you can only ask yourself is it worth the gamble?)
I've contacted David Silver spares and got the reply, they are discontinued :(
What to do next?
Does anyone know how to get my hands on a CDI for my bike that wont cost me a million quid for something that looks as if its just been dug out of the ground?
I've even considered the XL600 one, but it's the same story :(

Theres one on Ebay now for £30 buy it now. I doubt you'll be able to get anything other than second hand parts now, NOS doesn't exist and if you did find one it'll cost big money. An XL600 one will cost more second hand and you need the right one. Chances are if a second hand XBR one came from a working bike it'll be fine, XBR CDI's don't usually give a lot a trouble.

If you manage to get another one that works and appears reliable, have you thought about taking your original one apart if possible (I have no knowledge of the appearance) and just seeing if there is a dry joint or broken wire etc inside? It may worth a look seeing as the problems you are now encountering.
Just a thought.....

Its completely potted and very difficult to get apart without damaging components.

Cheers Simmo,
No matter where you are or what you buy, there is always someone that has one at half the price, after you purchase one.
As my Mum always say's "sods law"
Please send me your email address in case I need another in the future

Alternative solution is a hand programmable ignition module. I use it in my XBR.
